What to expect at your first MUN conference? – My experience as a first-time participant
Becoming a delegate: First MUN
Attending your first Model United Nations simulation can make you feel a little confused, but extremely excited at the same time. Starting from learning the rules of procedure and writing the position paper to prepare for the conference day. In this article, I’ll share my personal experience as a first-time MUN participant, offering a concrete look at the challenges you might face and what you can expect. This guide will help you feel prepared and confident. So, are you ready to dive into the world of diplomacy?
Preparation process: MUNA Academy
The journey began with the MUN Academy for about a month. During that period, I learned a lot about the United Nations in general and the functioning of the whole MUN simulation, along with the rules of procedure. That sequence of preparation was crucial because it gave me a great base for the next steps, which are choosing a country to represent, doing research, writing a position paper, and giving an opening speech.
Assigned countries: Forming delegations and preparing documents
After finishing the academy, I selected a country that I represented at the conference. My plan started with doing research about the country, studying its history, and learning about its stance on the main global issue that was chosen. At first, the given tasks seemed challenging. They required time and dedication to find relevant and non-biased information online. We had consultations with our lecturer a couple of times, who was always open to helping us if it was necessary. If you are struggling with doing research or writing a position paper, I strongly suggest you consult your lecturer or anyone, who has experience in MUNs.
Conference day: MUN Simulation
On the day of the conference, I was waiting with anticipation for the start of the following debates and hear about other delegations, as well. The opening ceremony prepared the ground for the event, with inspiring speeches from guest speakers emphasizing the importance of diplomacy and youth engagement in global matters. Once the sessions began, the real challenges of negotiation had started. We worked and discussed the topic, which was the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, for two consecutive. On the second day, as a result of our fruitful and active deliberation, we came up with a resolution and marked the end of our successful simulation.
In the beginning, you might feel unsure of yourself or scared to engage in caucuses, but I encourage you to be active and not to think about making mistakes. It’s okay, everyone makes mistakes. They make us stronger.
Conclusion: Only the beginning
As someone who has always been passionate about international relations and global issues, participating in the MUN conference was one of the biggest positive influences in my academic life. Taking part in the Model United Nations conference provided me with the perfect platform to engage in diplomacy, public speaking, and critical thinking, by representing a country on an international level. It gave me a solid base and motivation for my future engagement in more MUN conferences and other activities concerning international relations.
